this is my favorite christmas song by far, and perhaps my favorite hymn. every christmas i cross my fingers and hope it will be sung at church the original way. i don't like other versions of it. i don't like emmanuel with an "e", though i know that's the most common spelling. i love the name immanuel: "God with us". i like to call God by that name, and make it a prayer. if i ever have a son, i'm naming him immanuel, and calling him mani. i decided that after learning about immanuel kant who has the best name ever. i have doubts that i'll get to sing "o come o come immanuel" this year...i need to find a good version to play for myself when ever i like. i do have good versions of "little drummer boy"...both jars of clay and tori amos sing it well.
Posted by red clay at December 16, 2004 09:06 AM | TrackBackI love that hymn as well. Selah has a nice version on their Christmas CD. Although, they spell it with an "e".
Posted by: deb at December 16, 2004 03:33 PMAmy Grant's "Emmanuel God With Us" is one my favorite christmas songs. Although it starts with an "E", it is deffinately a beautiful powerful song. God has such great humor because I have really been searching through the old testament scriptures about "Emmanuel" this week. What a powerful word. God has blessed you friend. Kelly, thank you for your amazing words of wisdom and love.
Posted by: Chelsea at December 16, 2004 04:16 PMso third day does this song, i believe spelled with an e. not sure if you're into them, but it's one of the better christmas songs air1 is playing right now. (though my favorite is relient k's "i celebrate the day." lovely.)
(and i did a lesson on nov 28th where i had the kids make a daily advent candle. on the last day, we wrote "immanuel." i, not e. some of the kids are still burning theirs...more than i could have wished.)
Posted by: steph at December 16, 2004 05:02 PM* i always feel really un-Jesus-loving when i say my favorit christmas song is the "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" one.
Posted by: jane. at December 16, 2004 08:33 PMdeb. thanks. it's okay if they spell it with an "e", i'll just imagine an "i".
chelsea. thank you too. "emmanuel" is pretty interesting to look into. you'll have to tell me what you've learned when i see you.
steph. thanks for the suggestions. i like some of third day, i would like to hear their version. and i love that you made advent candles spelling it with an "i". it's just so much more lovely that way.
jane. that is very un-jesus of you. i really like "baby it's cold outside". my favorite part is when the girl gasps at what he just sang to her. it always makes me laugh.
Posted by: kelly at December 17, 2004 11:04 AMKell it's my favorite too...Merry Christmas!
Posted by: gwen at December 20, 2004 11:14 AMTry Sufjan Stevens. He does "O Come O Come Emmanuel." Kinda folk-sounding. I think you'll like it.
